5 Tips To Stay Calm In Difficult Situations

5 Tips To Stay Calm In Difficult Situations

We all have good days and bad days. There are times when you just want to remain calm, but you struggle due to the difficulty of the situation. It’s normal, and if you struggling to stay calm in stressful situations, you are not alone. I have been there, and many other people like us have struggled to remain calm during testing times.

Today I will share with you FIVE tips that will help you stay calm when you find yourself in difficult situations.

1. Change Your Perspective

Change Your Perspective

Most times when we are facing a difficult situation, we are overwhelmed, and we can’t figure out what we need to do. This, in turn, makes us anxious. The art of remaining calm in stressful situations starts with you getting a different perspective. It sounds so simple yet this single exercise alone will help you reduce your anxiety levels.

So what do I mean by getting a different perspective? Let me explain, have you ever found yourself giving the best advice to others to deal with situations? I am sure you have, but when you are in a similar position, you find it difficult to deal with it, right? The reason for this is simple, and it all has to do with having a different perspective.

Whenever you are in a difficult situation, taking a pause and thinking of the situation as a third person lets you find solutions. The advice you would give to someone dealing with a similar problem now helps you in dealing with your situation.

I have a way to make it easier and fun for you to practice. Have you seen the Dr. Strange movie? There is a scene where the Ancient One hits Dr. Strange on the chest. Here is a GIF of the scene for your reference.

Now, starting today, imagine like you leave your body, just like in the scene and analyze the situation as a third person. Trust me, this is fun and the more you practice, the better you will get at having a different perspective in every situation in your life. It will not just improve your behavior and responses to various situations but will also allow you to make better decisions.

2. It Is Difficult Only If You Make It

It Is Difficult Only If You Make It

Most situations seem complicated because we think they are. We give too much importance to things and forget that not everything needs to be an issue. Our perception of the situation is what matters. If we think and say it to ourselves over and over that something is difficult, that we can’t handle it, that it will make us anxious, chances are it will do all those things because we give it the power to do all of those things.

The moment we realize that we are in control of how something should make us feel, everything changes. The moment we understand that we are the ones driving our life, nothing can make us feel anxious. Then you don’t think of becoming calm in stressful situations, because the situations are no more difficult for you and being calm is the only way to be!

3. It Is Not Going To Matter In Few Years

It Is Not Going To Matter In Few Years

Knowing that whatever you are dealing with today probably won’t matter in a few years has changed how I deal with difficult situations today. Think about all the things that drove you crazy and made you super anxious. Do those situations mean anything to you today? Did it had any impact whatsoever on your life?

Chances are that you will answer NO and there is a reason. We give too much importance to even the smaller things that hold no actual value or has no potential to affect our lives in the long run. This is how we are, this is how we are programmed. The sooner you learn this truth, the better chance you will have at successfully dealing with challenging situations.

4. Do What Needs To Be Done Anyways

Do What Needs To Be Done Anyways

All of the things that I said above sometimes can be interpreted in the wrong way, and I am saying this because I have had personal experience in this regard. I shared the above advice with someone I know and after the conversation what she said was surprising. She said that “So if nothing will matter in the long run, why should I bother doing anything anyway?” See, I told you, it can be misinterpreted.

So, just to be clear, when I say it won’t matter in a few years, I don’t mean that you shouldn’t bother dealing with the situation. Every situation that comes your way needs to dealt with depending on its priority and immediate impact. For instance, your grades won’t matter in the long run, but that doesn’t mean that you should give up studying altogether. 🙂

No matter what, do what needs to be done anyways.

5. Focus On Your Breathing

Focus On Your Breathing

I intentionally kept this one at the end. If nothing works and you still can’t get calm, practice focusing on your breathing. The rhythm of your breath is something that will naturally make you more relaxed and reduce your anxiety. This exercise is a foolproof way to instantly become calm in any situation.

Nature has gifted us with everything we need to survive. Everything that we have in bodies, every process are like tools. If you learn how to utilize them, you can unlock your hidden potential.

These are the 5 tips that will help you stay calm in stressful situations. Let me know in the comments below if the suggestions work, and if you have your own practice to remain calm, please share it with me.
